Plex Launches Its Long-Awaited Rental Platform with Prices Starting at $3.99

Plex Launches Its Long-Awaited Rental Platform with Over 1000 Movies, Exclusively Available in the US

Following a successful $40 million fundraising effort, Plex is venturing into a new business model by unveiling a platform for movie rentals. This platform is initially accessible only to consumers in the United States.

This will give Plex an additional revenue stream, complementing its existing subscription services and ad-supported content. This strategic move is especially pertinent given the current volatility of the advertising sector.

Upon its debut, the rental platform will feature films from leading production houses such as WB, Paramount, MGM, Lionsgate, and A24. This means that Plex users will have the opportunity to rent popular titles, including Barbie, Wonka, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, The Color Purple, Expend4bles, PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and Mean Girls, among others.

Plex has indicated that the rental service will launch with over 1,000 film titles, each available from $3.99. The selection is expected to expand, with titles rotating in and out to vary the available options.

Plex has long considered developing a rental marketplace for TV shows and films. However, this plan wasn’t implemented due to changing priorities and various challenges, including the unforeseen impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a surge in streaming. Technical issues also occasionally hindered the progress.

Nevertheless, at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Plex announced its nearing completion of the rental marketplace, which will, for the moment, solely encompass movies, excluding TV show rentals and purchases. This decision was based on the consumer feedback, which indicated a stronger preference for renting movies.

Plex CEO Keith Valory elaborated on the decision cited, “We’re looking at the purchase use case because that creates some additional wrinkles — now you’ve got to keep this locker for people long-term, and does that really make sense [for us]?”

Once a movie is rented on Plex, viewers have 30 days to commence watching it and 48 hours to complete it once started, mirroring the policies of other rental platforms. Incomplete viewings will conveniently appear in Plex’s “Continue Watching” section. Plex anticipates expanding its collaboration with additional studios to enrich its movie rental offerings.

Despite the crowded market for movie rentals, Plex is confident that its unique recommendation system, powered by extensive user data, will set it apart. Plex users rely on the platform for various entertainment needs, including organizing personal media libraries, streaming live channels, enjoying ad-supported content, and discovering new titles through social networking features.

Although this social aspect led to privacy concerns among users, Plex has since refined its sharing options to enhance user awareness and consent. This rich data ecosystem could drive more users towards Plex’s movie rentals, mainly if recommendations are influenced by friends’ viewing activities on the platform.
