YouTube TV Hits 8 Million Subscribers

YouTube TV Hits 8 Million Subscribers, Becomes Fourth Largest Pay TV Service in the US

YouTube TV has surpassed eight million subscribers, announced by the company’s CEO, Neal Mohan, in the letter to the creators. By achieving this, YouTube has become the fourth largest pay TV service in the United States.

The news arrives as Charter marginally surpasses Comcast, securing the title of the largest Pay-TV provider with 14.122 million subscribers, compared to Comcast’s 14.106 million, followed by DirecTV in the third position.

The expansion of YouTube TV is slowing down the overall decline in the pay-TV sector, counteracting the steep losses conventional cable services face.

Highlighting a “growing interest in our subscription services,” YouTube’s Mohan revealed that the platform’s TV service has now exceeded eight million subscribers.

In contrast, the combined subscriber count for YouTube Music and Premium subscribers has crossed 100 million subscribers.

Mohan stated, “This year, we’re committed to providing a premier experience for subscriptions and enhancing YouTube’s presence in the living room,” emphasizing that integrating YouTube into “the living room experience,” especially with sports, “really shows the future of YouTube,” and referred to the platform’s acclaimed inaugural season of NFL Sunday Ticket football.

Mohan reflected, “When I began my journey at YouTube, there was a clear separation in perception between mainstream studio content and creator-generated content, but now, that distinction no longer exists. The audience desires a unified platform offering everything from a live sports event to the BBC, Khan Academy, and Nikkie Tutorials.”

He added, “And they’re engaging with YouTube in the same communal way we used to gather for traditional TV shows, watching on the largest screen in the house alongside friends and family. The statistics are remarkable. Globally, viewers now consume over 1 billion hours of YouTube content on their TVs daily. According to Nielsen’s streaming report in the U.S., YouTube has led in streaming watch time for the last 11 months.”
