Pete Distad Named CEO of ESPN, Fox, and Warner Bros Discovery’s Upcoming Sports Streaming Joint Venture
Pete Distad has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the newly announced sports streaming platform that’s being developed by ESPN, Fox, and Warner Bros Discovery as a JV. Distad worked as an executive for a decade at Apple and six years at Hulu. He will be responsible for the management and strategic decisions of the venture, which includes strategy, distribution, marketing, sales, and other key areas.
During his tenure at Apple from 2013 to 2023, Distad played a significant role in the business operations and global distribution of Video, Sports, and Apple TV+. His achievements include the launch of the new Apple TV in 2015 and the successful introduction and expansion of the Apple TV app, Apple TV+, and MLS Season Pass. His role initially focused on leading the product marketing for the Apple TV hardware.
He was the Senior Vice President of Marketing and Distribution at Hulu from 2007 to 2013. Distad was instrumental in the platform’s launch, focusing on customer acquisition, retention, and marketing strategies. His career also includes diverse experiences in technology and management consulting with notable firms such as McKinsey & Company, Calence (now part of Insight), and Andersen Consulting (which has become Accenture).
Distad expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating, “This is an incredible opportunity to build and grow a differentiated product that will serve passionate sports fans in the US outside of the traditional pay-TV bundle. I’m excited to be able to pull together the industry-leading sports content portfolios from these three companies to deliver a new best-in-class service.”
The collaborative statement from ESPN, Fox, and WBD highlighted Distad’s credentials: “Pete is an accomplished innovator and leader who has extensive experience with launching and growing new video services. We are confident he and his team will build an extremely compelling, fan-focused product for our target market.”
Distad will be reporting to a board of directors, consisting of representatives from each of the founding companies, once the joint venture is officially formed. He will lead an independent management team from the joint venture, which is planned to have its headquarters in Los Angeles.
The new streaming platform aims to unify the sports broadcasting portfolios of the companies and include some of their direct-to-consumer sports services, featuring major US professional and college sports leagues. The launch of this service is planned for the autumn and depends on the completion of formal agreements between the collaborating entities.
