Streaming Services Offer Black Friday Deals Amid Ongoing Profitability Struggles

The streaming industry is at a critical juncture, with major entertainment companies’ services having accumulated billions in losses over the years. Despite the push for profitability, these companies are continuing to offer significant discounts to attract new subscribers during the Black Friday period.

The streaming industry faces a classic dilemma: while attracting new subscribers is essential, it’s equally important to monetize them. Despite streaming still not being fully profitable though Disney and Max are nearing that milestone intense competition drives companies to remain aggressive in securing new users.

However, there are some notable exceptions in this like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and Apple TV+ are not offering any discounts. For highly profitable companies like Netflix, or those backed by tech giants like Amazon and Apple, such promotions appear to be unnecessary.

Notably, Disney is offering several Black Friday discounts, including a year of Hulu for $0.99 per month and a year of the Disney Bundle (Disney+ and Hulu) for $2.99 per month. New Hulu subscribers can also add Starz as an add-on for $0.99 per month for the first year, with Starz available as an add-on to Hulu.

Additionally, NBCUniversal’s Peacock is offering a one-year subscription for $19.99 or a six-month plan at $1.99 per month. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the potential Skydance takeover of Paramount+, the company is offering a $2.99 per month deal for six months on both Paramount+ and Paramount+ with Showtime. Similarly, Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max is offering a six-month subscription for $2.99 per month.

However, all the deals are tied to the ad-supported tiers except for Paramount+ with Showtime. This strategy is logical, as the ad-supported plans typically generate higher average revenue per user (ARPU) than the ad-free options. Despite the significant discounts, these companies have a way to offset the reduced subscription revenue, and if users remain after the discounted period, it becomes an added benefit.
