Sky to Cut 1,000 Jobs, Primarily Affecting Installation Staff, Amid Shift to Streaming and Digital Services
Sky plans to eliminate approximately 1,000 positions as the trend shifts from conventional satellite pay-TV to online streaming options. This marks another significant job reduction within the UK’s media sector.
With around 26,000 employees in the UK, the firm aims to cut its workforce by roughly 4% this year.
Most of these reductions will affect the company’s installation personnel, with an expected 25% decrease in this area as consumers increasingly opt for easy-to-use online products like Sky Stream and the Sky Glass smart TV.
Sky notes that nearly 75% of its new product uptake is now via online services, lessening the demand for traditional installation services.
This news follows Channel 4’s revealing plans to lay off 240 employees, marking its most considerable downsizing since 2008. The decline in the TV advertising sector has accelerated Channel 4’s shift towards prioritizing digital platforms.
Although Sky’s reliance on advertising revenue isn’t as high as that of other broadcasters such as Channel 4 and ITV, rumoured to announce job cuts soon—the company has felt the effects of the market’s decline.
Comcast, an American media conglomerate, acquired Sky, which includes its operations in Germany and Italy, for £32bn in 2018. However, two years ago, Comcast registered an $8.6 billion devaluation of Sky amid growing concerns about the economic forecast and the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on consumer spending.
In the last quarter of the previous year, Sky reported a 13% drop in revenue to $4.42bn (£3.48bn), a decline significantly influenced by currency changes.
A representative from Sky commented, “With the introduction of Sky Glass and Sky Stream, we’re transitioning our service delivery to internet-based TV rather than satellite. Customers gravitate towards products like Sky Glass and Sky Stream, which don’t need specialized installation, so we’ve had to adjust our staffing requirements accordingly.”
Sky is among several companies in the media and telecommunications sectors looking to streamline their traditional operations in response to changing consumer preferences.
