Netflix’s Advertising-Supported Tier Reaches New Milestone and Offers Subscriber Incentives
Netflix has achieved a significant milestone, with over 15 million global monthly active users now enjoying its advertising-supported tier. This growth is part of Netflix’s strategic push to refine its offerings for both consumers and advertisers alike.
In a bold move to enhance user experience, Netflix announced that starting next week, subscribers to the ad-supported tier can download content for offline viewing, becoming the first major ad-supported streaming service to provide this feature.
Previously, Netflix launched updates, which included an upgrade in video quality to 1080p from 720p and the ability to stream on two devices concurrently. These enhancements underscore Netflix’s commitment to making the ad-tier subscription increasingly attractive and user-friendly.
Binge Ads
In the first quarter of 2024, Netflix plans to introduce an inventive “binge ad” system. This system rewards subscribers who watch three consecutive episodes of a series with an ad-free fourth episode, thereby acknowledging and adapting to the binge-watching habits of its audience. This initiative aims to offer a more personalized and immersive viewing experience, particularly for those on the ‘Standard with adverts’ tier.
On the advertising front, Netflix is set to offer new opportunities for advertisers globally starting next year. Advertisers can use the streamer’s binge ad format, catering to the trend of watching multiple episodes sequentially. Additionally, in early 2024, Netflix is poised to launch the integration of QR codes into its advertising creative within the US, offering a direct response mechanism for advertisers.
Expanding its advertising formats, Netflix now accommodates 10, 20, and 60-second ads globally, in addition to the initial 15- and 30-second spots. The streaming giant has also been enhancing its measurement capabilities, partnering with third-party verification firms like Integral Ad Science and DoubleVerify and incorporating advertising impact metrics through EDO Inc., as well as Nielsen ONE measurement in the US.
Sponsorship opportunities have been introduced in the US market, with plans to expand internationally in the coming year. These sponsorships offer unique branding prospects, including title, moment, and live event sponsorships.
Amidst these updates, Netflix has also revised its subscription pricing. The basic plan, no longer open to new subscribers, now costs existing users $11.99 per month in the United States, a slight increase from the previous $9.99 rate. In the UK, the price has been set to £7.99 per month. The premium plan has risen to $22.99 per month in the US and £17.99 per month in the UK, marking a strategic pivot in Netflix’s pricing structure.
Netflix’s continuous innovation in its ad-supported tier and its broader service offerings reflects its dedication to providing value to both subscribers and advertisers. These enhancements and the introduction of consumer-friendly features, such as the offline viewing option and the “binge ad” reward system, solidify Netflix’s position as a forward-thinking leader in the streaming industry.
