Netflix Surges Ahead with Record Subscriber Growth and Strategic Expansion in Q4 2023
Netflix strengthened its position as the world’s premier subscription video streaming service, exceeding expectations by adding 13.1 million new subscribers in the last quarter of 2023, setting a new record for Q4. The company’s revenue slightly surpassed analyst predictions, though its net income didn’t meet expectations.
By the close of 2023, Netflix’s global membership totalled 260.28 million with 13.1 million new subscribers, surpassing the projected 8.8 million net new subscribers for the quarter. Following this news, Netflix’s stock rose 8% in post-market trading.
The company reported a 12% increase in Q4 revenue year-over-year, reaching $8.83 billion. This exceeded Netflix’s projections, aided by favourable currency exchange rates and a surge in membership growth beyond their initial estimates. However, net income stood at $938 million, translating to $2.11 per share.
Earlier, Netflix announced a 10-year agreement with WWE for “Monday Night Raw,” signalling its most significant foray into live sports broadcasting. Starting in 2025, Netflix will pay TKO Group approximately $500 million annually for media rights across various regions. “WWE is great sports entertainment with a huge, established and passionate fanbase, and we believe this long-term partnership will be a big value add for our members,” Netflix stated in its Q4 shareholder letter.
In an earnings interview, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos discussed the WWE deal, noting it aligns with the company’s forecasted $17 billion content spending in 2024. He clarified, “I would not look at this as a signal to any other change, or a change to our sports strategy,” categorizing WWE as “sports entertainment” rather than traditional sports.
The company reported a near 70% growth in ad-tier membership compared to the previous quarter, although specific numbers weren’t disclosed. To encourage more sign-ups, Netflix plans to phase out the Basic plan without ads in select markets like the U.K. and Canada from Q2 onwards.
Netflix also led in Academy Awards nominations, securing 18 nods, including seven for Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” a Leonard Bernstein biopic. This followed news of Scott Stuber, head of Netflix’s film division, leaving to start a new media venture.
With regard to content, Netflix released 99 original series in Q4, a decrease from the previous year’s 145. The company anticipates a robust lineup for 2024 despite delays caused by last year’s strikes. Upcoming series include “Squid Game” Season 2, “The Diplomat” Season 2, “Bridgerton” Season 3, and “Empress” Season 2, among others. New shows highlighted were “3 Body Problem,” “Griselda,” “The Gentlemen,” “Eric,” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender.”
The film slate is equally promising, featuring the “Rebel Moon” sequel, “Back in Action,” “Carry On,” “Spellbound,” a new “Beverly Hills Cop” installment, and “Six Triple Eight.”
Netflix’s gaming venture, bundled with streaming plans at no extra cost, is still in its infancy but has seen tripled user engagement in 2023. The Grand Theft Auto trilogy release was particularly successful regarding installs and engagement.
Regarding competition, Netflix acknowledged the likelihood of more consolidation in the industry but expressed no interest in acquiring linear assets. The company focused on continuous improvement and expansion into new areas like advertising and gaming, considering the vast potential in the $600 billion revenue market of pay TV, film, games, and branded advertising.
