NBCUniversal Brings Local Sports to Peacock’s Streaming Platform

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, NBCUniversal, owned by Comcast, will bring its regional sports networks into its Peacock streaming service as early as the beginning of 2025. This move is part of NBCUniversal’s ongoing efforts to enhance its streaming offerings and attract more sports viewers to the platform, sources familiar with the matter revealed.

Furthermore, the Wall Street Journal report stated that NBCUniversal plans to add four NBC Sports networks to Peacock, which hold local broadcast rights in key markets such as Boston, Philadelphia, and Northern California.

Notably, to provide Peacock users access to high-profile sports content from these regions the networks will stream games from major teams, including the Golden State Warriors, Boston Celtics, and Philadelphia Phillies.

Additionally, NBCUniversal’s regional sports games will continue to be available on traditional television. However, the rollout of the plan could face delays as the company is still finalizing the details. As per the Wall Street Journal, one option under consideration is offering the sports channels as premium add-ons in local markets, allowing fans to pay an additional fee to stream their favorite teams’ games.

In July, alongside Amazon and Disney’s ESPN, NBCUniversal secured the broadcasting rights for NBA games as part of an 11-year agreement worth $77 billion. This deal grants the networks extensive coverage of NBA content till 2035.
