Jio launches new Netflix-based prepaid bundle plan.
Jio, the telecommunications and TV provider owned by Reliance Industries in India, has introduced prepaid packages that include a Netflix subscription.
Although Netflix subscriptions are already part of certain Jio Postpaid and Jio Fiber packages, this marks the inaugural time for Jio’s prepaid users to avail of such a bundled offer. This package will be accessible to an extensive base of 400 million Jio prepaid subscribers.
Jio offers two distinct Netflix-inclusive plans:
1. A mobile-specific plan with unlimited 5G data and a Jio Welcome Offer of 2 GB/day for INR 1099.
2. A basic Netflix plan suitable for larger screens, bundled with unlimited 5G data and a Jio Welcome Offer of 3 GB/day at INR 1499.
When asked about the new offering, Kiran Thomas, the CEO of Jio Platforms, emphasised Jio’s dedication to providing top-tier services and remarked that the Netflix bundle in prepaid plans showcases this commitment. He also highlighted the growing partnership between Jio and global entities like Netflix, aiming to set precedents for the worldwide market.
Also, Tony Zameczkowski, the Vice President of APAC Partnerships at Netflix, expressed excitement about deepening ties with Jio. He mentioned Netflix’s success in launching popular local content in India and expects the new prepaid bundles to extend further the reach of their diverse Indian and global content collection.
Recently, Netflix has been taking wide measures to increase its subscriber base and revenue, and in one such move, Netflix implemented restrictions on password sharing with paid sharing feature, which resulted in an addition of nearly 6 million subscribers in Q2 2023
Though the feature added value to the company, last month, Netflix announced its decision to stop this feature and added more restrictions to prevent account sharing by introducing the Netflix Household feature, which would allow only the individuals in the house of the primary account holder to use the account.
Viacom18, a collaborative venture between Network 18 (a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited) and Paramount Global, has shown a growing interest in sports. And this helped Jio leverage more with sports events; they streamed all FIFA 2022 matches on Jio Cinema and offered European football games from La Liga, Ligue 1, and Serie A on JioCinema for free.
Furthermore, they secured streaming rights for the Men’s & Women’s IPL. Their collaboration with Manchester City further emphasises their commitment to providing diverse sporting content to fans.
