Amid rumours of Hotstar’s potential sell-off, Blackstone begins negotiations to purchase a stake.
The global private equity powerhouse Blackstone has recently begun discussing acquiring a share in Walt Disney‘s Indian division, Hotstar. This action aligns with Disney’s consideration of diverse strategic options for its footprint in the swiftly changing Indian digital entertainment landscape.
Blackstone’s interest in Disney’s Indian assets, specifically its digital and TV business, comes as the entertainment titan actively explores selling options or establishing a joint venture partnership.
Spearheading the dialogues between Blackstone and Disney was the Blackstone-funded US media entity Candle Media, founded by former Disney executives.
Disney’s endeavours in India have recently been overshadowed by the rising prominence of JioCinema, a platform backed by Reliance Industries Limited (RIL).
JioCinema has secured digital streaming rights for major sports events, such as the IPL and FIFA World Cup 2022, in just a year. Furthermore, the platform has also successfully acquired the media rights for domestic matches of the Indian cricket team, a domain once dominated by Disney+ Hotstar.
The aggressive strategies employed by JioCinema, including broadcasting premium sports events free of charge and inking content partnerships with esteemed American studios like HBO and NBCUniversal, have significantly impacted Disney’s standing in India. This aggressive approach led to Disney+ Hotstar witnessing a decline of over 20 million subscribers from September 2022 to July 2023, as revealed in Disney’s recent financial disclosures.
Attempting to regain its foothold, Disney+ Hotstar opted to provide free streaming of premium cricket events, such as the Asia Cup and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, specifically for mobile users. Despite these efforts, it seems the tide may be turning, as Disney appears to be contemplating divesting either a portion or its entirety of its Indian operations, which includes the streaming platform Disney+ Hotstar.
Other sources indicate that apart from Blackstone, Disney has also entered talks with Indian tycoons Gautam Adani and Kalanithi Maran, the proprietor of Sun TV Network. The results of these conversations are still uncertain.
Disney’s financial performance is plummeting from 2021, and Disney+ saw a slowdown in subscriber growth. By the fourth quarter of 2022, Disney’s direct-to-consumer segment, including Disney+, ESPN+, Hulu, and Hotstar, registered an operating deficit of $1.47 billion, marking a notable increase from the previous year. After this announcement,
Disney’s share price plummeted by more than 13%. Over the past year, Disney faced significant financial setbacks, contributing to one of the most substantial dips in its stock value in ten years.
