Apple TV App Launches on Android After Eight-Year Wait

Apple has finally launched its Apple TV app for Android devices, more than eight years after the streaming service first debuted. The app became available on the Google Play Store on February 12, making it accessible to Android users worldwide.

The Apple TV app supports all Android smartphones and tablets running Android 10 or later. It allows users to subscribe to Apple TV+ for $9.99 per month and MLS Season Pass for $14.99 per month or $99 per season. Subscription payments can be made through Google Play, and the pricing remains the same as on iOS devices.

Apple claims that the app was designed specifically for Android, saying its engineers built it from the ground up for an “intuitive interface.” However, a key limitation is the lack of casting support, meaning users cannot stream content from their mobile device to a connected TV. The company has not explained why this feature is missing.

Apple’s delay in launching an Android version of the app remains unclear. Until now, Android users could only access Apple TV+ through workarounds like subscribing via Amazon Prime Video’s premium add-on, which launched in October 2023.

With the launch of this app, Apple TV is now available across multiple platforms, including iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple TV streaming devices. It is also supported on smart TVs from brands like Samsung, LG, Sony, Vizio, and TCL, as well as Roku, Amazon Fire TV, PlayStation, Xbox, and web browsers at tv.apple.com.

Apple TV+ offers a selection of original shows and movies, including “Severance,” “Ted Lasso,” “The Morning Show,” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.” It also includes “Friday Night Baseball” with no local blackout restrictions.

MLS Season Pass, available separately through the Apple TV app, provides full access to all Major League Soccer matches, including the regular season, playoffs, and Leagues Cup. The service will introduce “Sunday Night Soccer” in 2025, a weekly primetime match featuring top MLS games.

Apple has also updated its existing Apple TV app for Chromecast with Google TV to allow subscriptions to Apple TV+ and MLS Season Pass directly through the device. Despite the long wait for an Android version, the app’s missing casting feature and Apple’s delayed expansion raise questions about its overall strategy for reaching a wider audience.
