Amazon Prime Video Introduces Ad-Supported Tier in the UK at Existing Subscription Price, Starts February 5

Amazon is set to introduce an ad tier plan to its Prime Video service in the UK, beginning February 5.
This update from Amazon reveals that a selection of movies and TV shows on Prime Video in the UK and Germany will now feature “limited advertisements.” This new feature does not extend to content that customers rent or buy.
This development follows Amazon’s previous announcement about launching a similar ad tier plan for Prime Video users in the US, slated to start on January 29.
Amazon’s approach aligns with other major streaming services like Netflix and Disney+, which introduced more affordable options with ad-supported and ad-free tiers last year.
Notably, the price of Amazon Prime Video’s new ad tier plan will match its existing ad-free subscription. However, users can upgrade to an ad-free experience for an additional monthly fee of £2.99.
The ad-free version is currently available for registration, but billing for this service will begin on February 5. Prime Video has indicated that this new ad tier plan will not be available for subscribers in Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.
In a message sent to its subscribers, Amazon conveyed that this initiative aims to boost long-term content investment. They assure subscribers that the ad volume will be substantially lower than on traditional linear TV and other streaming services. They also inform subscribers that no action is required from them, and there will be no change to the current pricing of their Prime membership.
Live events like sports and Amazon Freevee content will continue to include advertising. Later in the year, plans are underway to roll out this ad tier plan on Prime Video in other countries, including France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Australia.
