YouTube has started experimenting with Generative AI features that summarize and engage with the comments section.
YouTube is launching trials for Generative-AI tools as part of its premium subscription package. Subscribers will soon gain access to a novel AI-based conversational feature that provides answers and suggestions relevant to the videos they watch.
Additionally, a select group of users will have the chance to test a feature designed to distil the essence of conversations in video comments.
These features will be accessible for testing on YouTube’s experimental features page, youtube.com/new. The conversational feature is expected to roll out in the coming weeks, while the comment summarization tool is currently being tested with an exclusive group of users.
The conversational AI, relying on large language models, aims to enhance user engagement by offering more profound insights into the video content without disrupting playback. This interactive tool will be available first to U.S.-based Android users and can be activated via an “Ask” button.
The AI-enabled comment summarization is intended to help viewers and creators quickly grasp the general sentiment and discussion topics in the comments section. For creators, this could be a valuable tool to glean content ideas and manage community interaction more efficiently. This summarization will consider only the published comments.
Initially, the comment summarization experiment will support only English-language comments.
These introductions are part of YouTube’s broader strategy to integrate AI across its services. They include ongoing projects such as AI-curated playlists on YouTube Music, AI-enhanced ads, and creator tools for music selection and dubbing. The platform has also explored AI for generating video summaries and interactive quizzes.
