Warner Bros. Discovery reports reduced losses in Q3 2023 financial performance but faces a loss of 700k subscribers and a decline in advertising revenue.
Warner Bros. Discovery has reported a significant improvement in its third-quarter financials, with a net loss narrowing to $417 million, a steep decline from the $2.31 billion loss of the previous year. The media giant’s revenue saw a 2% increase to $9.98 billion, bolstered by the box-office triumph of the “Barbie” film.
Despite this boost, the company faced a 12% decline in advertising revenue across its network portfolio, reflecting broader challenges in the industry. Even so, direct-to-consumer revenue grew by 5%, partly thanks to price hikes and new partnerships. Notably, ad revenue in the streaming segment soared by 30%, indicating advertisers chasing broadband audiences.
President and CEO David Zaslav expressed satisfaction with the company’s direction, especially the growth in Adjusted EBITDA, which saw a 22% increase excluding foreign exchange impacts. Zaslav noted the company’s aggressive debt reduction, with nearly $12 billion paid down.
However, the decline in the number of streaming subscribers with a loss of 700,000, bringing the total down to 95.1 million — shows the volatility of the streaming market. The Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) per streaming subscriber did rise by 6% to $7.82, underscoring the potential in the company’s streaming business model.
The company’s TV networks, which include TNT and TBS, have been struggling with the decline in traditional cable subscribers. To counter this, Warner Bros. Discovery has launched new live-streamed versions of CNN and a sports content tier on its Max streaming service.
Zaslav remains focused on the future, stating that the company is “excited to continue building on this strong momentum,” aiming to create long-term shareholder value. The media conglomerate’s strategy is a delicate balance of managing traditional assets while fostering growth in the streaming sector, with initiatives like the integration of Discovery+ content with Max and the standalone offering of Discovery+ to consolidate its market presence.
The third-quarter results reflect Warner Bros. Discovery’s strategic resilience as it navigates the post-merger challenges and the evolving media consumption landscape. Focusing on debt reduction and cash flow, the company is steering towards stabilizing its operations and securing its position in the competitive media industry.
