TikTok Test-Runs the Launch of Ad-free Subscription Plan, Priced at $4.99

TikTok is exploring to introduce an ad-free subscription plan, anticipated to be priced at $4.99.

TikTok may soon introduce a feature allowing users to opt for an ad-free version at a monthly fee, as per images shared by Android Authority showing such an offer on the app. The screenshots reveal a $4.99 monthly charge for this ad-free experience. However, it’s only being tested in a particular market outside the US, as confirmed by a TikTok representative to Variety. 

This move towards an ad-free tier aligns with TikTok’s efforts to diversify its revenue streams. For instance, TikTok Shop, its in-app marketplace, has been more prominently featured, and there’s been a push on ads and promotions to encourage user purchases. 

However, the platform has faced challenges in moderating the items sold on its Shop, with a review by Insider revealing that some prohibited items were available for purchase.

Moreover, the concept of ad-free subscriptions has been introduced previously. Elon Musk has expressed interest in introducing a pricier, ad-free subscription on X. However, it has yet to fully materialise, with X Premium subscribers seeing about half the ads. 

Meta is also reportedly considering ad-free versions for Facebook and Instagram in the European Union to address regulatory concerns around data privacy. As per the Wall Street Journal, during a discussion in August, Meta proposed a monthly fee of around €10 and €13 for ad-free desktop and mobile usage, respectively, in Europe, to those who prefer not to receive personalized ads. 


The company also conveyed to the BBC that while they value the free services supported by customized ads, they are looking into alternatives to adhere to the changing regulatory landscape. However, no further details were shared at the moment.
