Netflix to Lose Top Spot in Arabic Markets by 2029, New Research Predicts

Report Suggests Shahid VIP to Lead Over Netflix in terms of Subscriber numbers in Arabic-Speaking Territories.

Currently, Netflix is the biggest streaming platform in terms of subscriber numbers across thirteen Arabic-speaking countries. However, a recent study indicates that by 2029, Netflix will lose its position as the market leader in this region to Shahid VIP.

According to a study by Digital TV Research, the number of SVOD subscriptions in these thirteen Arabic-speaking markets is expected to double from 14 million in 2023 to 26 million by 2029. Netflix led with 3.8 million subscribers by the end of 2023, followed by Shahid VIP, a streaming service operated by the MBC Group, a major media conglomerate in the Middle East, with 3.5 million subscribers. StarzPlay was just a little behind, with 3 million subscribers, based on the research conducted by the company. It is to be noted that Saudi Arabia’s government predominantly owns the MBC Group.

Forecasts by Digital TV Research suggest that by 2029, Shahid VIP will emerge as the leading streaming platform with an estimated 5.8 million subscribers in the Arabic-speaking nations, with Netflix trailing behind with an expected 5.6 million subscribers and StarzPlay reaching the 5 million mark.

The projections also indicate that Disney+ and Amazon are anticipated to secure 3.2 million subscribers each in these regions by 2029. Meanwhile, the regional pay-TV OSN is predicted to add 1.5 million subscribers, with Apple TV+ anticipated to attract around half a million subscribers, according to the research firm’s estimations.

Netflix has been actively broadening its selection of Arabic content, marking a significant milestone in 2021 with the release of its inaugural Arabic original feature, a star-studded remake of the Italian blockbuster Perfect Strangers. Its portfolio also features popular titles such as the reality series Dubai Bling and the Saudi Arabian film Naga, which was highlighted at the recent Red Sea Film Festival.

Simon Murray, a leading analyst at Digital TV Research, commented on the evolving dynamics within the streaming landscape. He noted, “As several platforms based in the United States scale back their international expansion and Sign incommitments to local content, the regional Arabic platforms are poised to flourish.”
