Netflix selling popcorn: Is this a new marketing strategy?

You can now munch on ready-to-eat popcorn from Netflix and enjoy their ready-to-binge shows at the same time. The OTT giant is teaming up with Popcorn Indiana for its new line of Now Popping popcorn flavors “Cult Classic Cheddar Kettle” and “Swoonworthy Cinnamon Kettle”.

Announcing the popcorn line, Netflix said “movie night and popcorn go together like a hot dog and a bun, ice cream and sprinkles, or a beach day and a lounge chair”.

Notably, these popcorn lines will be available at Walmart stores nationwide along with other retailers in the US, with information available on Popcorn Indiana’s website. As per Shoprite, each of these popcorn bags are priced at $4.5, a price point not too far from Netflix’s Basic Plan with ads (@ $6.99 per month in the US).

Furthermore, Netflix does not expect to turn a huge profit with this business venture right away, however, it will be able to expand the brand’s outreach to shoppers at a vast number of retail outlets. Hence the underlying short-term goal could be increasing the number of paid subscribers through these extensive marketing campaigns that might bear the fruit later on as its own business venture.

Additionally, Netflix is not the first one to do this, as AMC theaters also launched its line of popcorn brands in 2021, as an attempt to improve its branding and improve revenue during the pandemic era.

For Netflix this is not the first time when they have launched a food-related brand, as they also launched a “Netflix & Chill’d” ice cream flavor in collaboration with Ben & Jerry. The ice cream flavor was peanut butter ice cream with sweet-and-salty pretzel swirls and fudge brownies, which you might still notice available on store shelves. The move is a part of Netflix’s bigger goal of cementing itself as a brand associated with people in their daily lives.

The release of Now Popping has been a part of Netflix touting its summer lineup of shows with the final season of “Vikings: Valhalla” along with new seasons of romantic comedy “A Family Affair” starring Nicole Kidman, Joey King and Zac Efron; “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” starring Eddie Murphy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt; “Too Hot to Handle” and “Barbecue Showdown”, to name just a few.
