Netflix Pledges $1 Billion Investment in Mexico’s Film and TV Industry

Netflix has announced a $1 billion investment in Mexico’s film and TV industry over the next four years (2025-2028), strengthening its commitment to local content creation. The announcement was made by co-CEO Ted Sarandos during a press conference with Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum.

“This investment, and the productions derived therefrom, will benefit Mexican production companies and will contribute to the growth of the local audiovisual industry and the creation of opportunities nationwide,” Netflix stated.

Additionally, Netflix will invest $2 million to upgrade Mexico City’s historic Churubusco Studios, further boosting its local production capabilities. The company will also continue funding talent development programs, building on a $1 million fund launched in 2023 to support creatives through 2025.

Netflix’s deep ties with Mexico date back to 2011 when it first entered the market. Its first non-U.S. original, Club de Cuervos, was produced in Mexico in 2015. Since opening its Latin American headquarters in Mexico City in 2020, Netflix has grown its local team from 30 to nearly 400 employees.

Ted Sarandos, Co-CEO of Netflix, said, “This country holds a special place in Netflix’s own history. We created Club de Cuervos in Mexico for Mexico — and it paved the way for our programming strategy, which is all about local production.” Also added, “Being local is very important to us. It’s why all of our series and films in Mexico are made in partnership with local production companies and local partners. Every single one.”

Netflix’s Mexican productions have achieved critical acclaim, including Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma, which won three Academy Awards, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which secured the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Furthermore, the company continues to expand its slate with new titles like Love Sick, The Dead Girls, and an upcoming documentary on legendary musician Juan Gabriel.
