Netflix Initiates Layoffs Amidst Film Department Restructure

Netflix is currently undergoing a significant restructuring within its film department, with reports indicating that approximately 15 individuals will be laid off as part of the process. It has been confirmed following the news last month that Ted Lin will be Head of the film division at Netflix, replacing Scott Stuber. After Stuber’s declaration, regarding his departure from the position, at the beginning of the year, Netflix quickly took action to fill the position, thereby, appointing Lin in his place.

It’s important to note that while around 15 staffers are facing layoffs, Netflix may look to bring in new talent following the reorganization. Further, Lin is set to replace departing executives in the coming weeks, as part of his new vision for the restructuring.

As part of Netflix’s reorganization, the division will now be segmented by genre, with each genre overseen by dedicated executives. Niija Kuykendall will spearhead faith-based, holiday, and young adult projects, Jason Young will assume responsibility for comedies and rom-coms, Ori Marmur will take charge of action, fantasy, horror, and sci-fi genres, while Kira Goldberg will manage dramas, thrillers, and family films.

Ted Lin previously collaborated on notable projects with Netflix like “The Two Popes” and the live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender” series. Lin has also produced some of the best works like Andy Muschietti’s adaptation of Stephen King’s “It,” Disney’s “Aladdin”, and “Lego” film franchise through his production company Rideback.

Ted Lin said, “While I’ve been approached many times during my past 15 years at Rideback, I could truly never imagine leaving until Bela reached out with this incredible opportunity. It’s always been my aspiration at Rideback to make movies with worldwide appeal and universal themes, and there is no better place to do that than at the company with the widest global audience. It’s an incredible opportunity that I couldn’t say no to.”
