NBCUniversal has introduced personalized broadcast experiences via its NextGen TV (ATSC 3.0) over-the-air channels on NBC- and Telemundo-owned stations in four major markets.
Announced on April 15, 2024, the new product incorporates hyper-localization, personalization, and enhanced content features to enhance the viewer experience while providing opportunities for advanced engagement, advertising, and measurement within the broadcast television landscape. Additionally, the new system offers detailed, near real-time audience metrics that inform personalized editorial, programming, and advertising while prioritizing privacy.
Furthermore, the enhanced experience lets viewers tune into a NextGen TV over-the-air channel by activating automatically. It is now accessible on NBC- and Telemundo-owned stations in several major markets. These markets include New York (WNBC and WNJU), Philadelphia (WCAU), Miami (WTVJ and WSCV), and Los Angeles (KNBC).
Additional stations under NBCUniversal Local, owned by NBC and Telemundo, are set to roll out the new application in key media markets nationwide shortly.
Notably, the new product will be showcased by NBCUniversal and its collaborators at the 2024 National Association of Broadcasters Show in Las Vegas at the ATSC exhibit in the Las Vegas Convention Center West Hall 3056.
NBCUniversal has further unveiled its new product featuring several capabilities in collaboration with Fincons, Ease Live (an Evertz company), and Pearl TV. These features comprise the ability to restart programs that are already in progress, access to personalized weather information such as meteorologist reports, radar, forecasts, and severe weather alerts, and integration of hyper-localized elements into the TODAY show. The viewers will also be offered broader access to content, including clips, full episodes, and alternative programming from NBC and Telemundo’s local and entertainment shows and events, national news, and sports.
Shawn Makhijani, senior vice president of business development and strategy and NBC Spot On, NBCUniversal advertising and partnerships, in a statement, said, “The launch of this innovative experience is a considerable milestone for broadcast television and demonstrates the immense potential and possibilities NextGen TV has for viewers, programmers, stations and advertisers. We are proud to further our leadership position in ATSC 3.0 by developing this innovative product with our partners and look forward to the continued evolution of its capabilities and benefits. We are truly excited to present these enhancements to our NBC and Telemundo viewers in several top markets, with more to come.”
NBCUniversal enhances safety features by providing expanded safety controls and access to public service notifications in its new viewing experience. It also enables near-real-time tracking of viewer and program metrics. The integrated data system delivers comprehensive public safety alerts from both the Warning System (IPAWS) and FEMA Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) and The Weather Channel, tailored to viewers’ locations and specific households.
