HBO Max to Debut on Movistar+ Platform Before Official Launch

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced a new partnership with Telefónica’s Movistar+. As per this partnership, HBO Max will be introduced to the telecommunications company’s pay TV subscribers in Spain, beginning May 21. Subscribers of Movistar+ will now gain access to Warner Bros. Discovery’s upgraded streaming platform, Max, accessible to customers subscribed to the Movistar+ Ficción Total package. Notably, subscribers can conveniently access the streamer directly through the main Movistar Plus+ navigation interface and via the on-demand service, without any additional charges.

This launch coincides with the eagerly awaited second season of the HBO original series House of the Dragon, scheduled for its European premiere on June 17th. As part of the agreement, Movistar+ customers will have the opportunity to delve into an extensive selection of HBO Max series and movies, featuring acclaimed titles like The Last of Us, Succession, Dune, Wonka, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Additionally, Max will be the exclusive platform for viewers to catch every moment of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games this summer.

Upcoming programming on Max features the limited series The Sympathiser, co-directed by Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar, starring Sandra Oh and Robert Downey Jr. in multiple roles. Max will also introduce a new lineup of Max Originals inspired by beloved Warner Bros. brands, such as The Penguin and Welcome to Derry, based on Stephen King’s It.

Furthermore, subscribers can anticipate a diverse selection of films from Warner Bros.’ extensive library, including beloved franchises like Harry Potter, Paddington, Matrix, The Dark Knight trilogy, Joker, and Lord of the Rings. Popular shows such as All in 90 Days, The Gold Rush, and Discovery’s Fixer Upper will be available for streaming on Max, further enriching the entertainment offerings for viewers.

Marking a significant step in its global expansion strategy for Spanish viewers, HBO Max is set to expand its reach across Europe with streaming availability in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Andorra, Bosnia & Herzegovnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Later this year, launches are scheduled for the Netherlands and Poland, while plans to extend the service into France and Belgium are underway, although specific dates have yet to be confirmed.

HBO Max is gearing up for further expansion into new markets in 2025, with countries such as the UK and Australia primed to receive the service. This move comes as exclusive HBO output deals are nearing their conclusion, signalling HBO Max’s intent to broaden its global footprint and offer its diverse range of content to audiences worldwide.
