ESPN will begin offering its linear TV channels directly to consumers via a streaming model starting this autumn. Owned by The Walt Disney Company, ESPN’s move signals the growing shift from cable television toward flexible, subscription-based digital access.
The new offering is designed to give sports fans the option to access ESPN’s full programming lineup, including live games, talk shows, and exclusive content, without the need for a traditional cable or satellite TV package.
The streaming rollout will include two main pricing plans:
- Unlimited Plan: $29.99/month — This gives users access to everything ESPN has to offer, including all live content and enhanced app features.
- Select Plan: $11.99/month — A more affordable option for casual viewers, offering a limited range of ESPN content.
Additionally, Disney is promoting a launch bundle priced at $29.99/month, which includes full access to Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN. This bundled offer is targeted at users seeking a comprehensive entertainment package covering sports, films, and TV shows. To deliver this new experience, ESPN is revamping its ESPN App for both mobile devices and connected TV’s. The upgraded app will serve as a centralised hub for all ESPN content, whether users subscribe directly or access it via traditional cable packages.
Jimmy Pitaro, Chairman, ESPN, said, “The enhanced ESPN App will be the ultimate sports destination for personalized experiences and features. We are providing everything ESPN has to offer directly to fans and all in one place.”
Pitaro emphasised that the company aimed to keep things simple and recognisable. “As we thought about the name, we kept returning to the fact that, across every generation, ESPN is the most trusted, loved and recognised name in sports, and that we should keep it simple and double down on the power of ESPN,” he added.
Current ESPN+ subscribers don’t need to worry about switching platforms right away. According to ESPN, those with existing ESPN+ plans will automatically be enrolled in the new system:
- Subscribers with standalone ESPN+ will be placed on the ESPN Select Plan.
- Users who have the Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ bundle will transition to the Select Bundle Plan, offering a more integrated experience.
While this direct-to-consumer option expands access, ESPN is not eliminating traditional cable distribution. Those who prefer watching through their current TV provider can continue doing so.
This transition comes at a time when cable subscriptions are steadily declining and viewers are shifting to streaming platforms for convenience, flexibility, and cost control. By offering standalone access, ESPN is aiming to maintain its relevance in a rapidly changing media environment.
With the $29.99 monthly price tag matching the cost of the full Disney bundle, some may question the value of subscribing to ESPN as a standalone service. Others may wonder how much live content will be available under the $11.99 Select Plan compared to the full Unlimited Plan. ESPN is clearly betting that sports fans will be willing to pay for access to their favourite teams and leagues without being tied to a cable box.
