Disney+ and Paramount Streamlining Content: Titles Set for Removal in Strategic Move

Disney+ and Paramount+ Withdraw Numerous Titles from Their Streaming Platforms Recently

Disney+ has removed more than 120 titles, including films and television series, from its streaming catalogue in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

According to a report by Deadline, the content withdrawn mainly includes:

  • Original Disney Channel movies.
  • Traditional live-action Disney productions.
  • Specific programming from Nat Geo and ESPN.

The withdrawal follows a periodic assessment of the platform’s content.

Notable deletions include films such as “Darby O’Gill And The Little People” and “Greyfriars Bobby: The True Story Of A Dog,” along with TV series like the Disney XD comedy “Zeke And Luther,” ABC’s “Pepper Ann,” and Nat Geo’s documentary “North Korea: Fire And Fury.”

The process of removing content began in May 2023, with notable titles like “The World According To Jeff Goldblum,” “Dollface,” and “Willow” being among the nearly 50 titles removed. Additionally, projects like “Nautilus” and “The Spiderwick Chronicles” were dropped before even making it to Disney+ as part of the company’s efforts to reduce expenses.

Paramount Cuts Down on International Content Offerings

Similarly, Paramount has withdrawn several international originals from its streaming platform, Paramount+. Titles such as the UK’s “The Killing Kind” and “The Burning Girls,” as well as the Australian series “One Night,” have been removed, alongside acquisitions like the BBC’s “Accused” and NBC’s reboot of “Quantum Leap,”

In a recent internal memo, Paramount’s leader, Bob Bakish, stressed the importance of focused execution among his team, especially amidst speculation about the company’s deals.

He highlighted the criticality of earnings growth for 2024, pointing out the significant draw of blockbuster hits. Bakish noted that the company’s strategy would be to concentrate on the most impactful and widely appealing franchises, movies, and TV shows with a global reach across various platforms.

Bakish acknowledged that this strategic focus might reduce local and international original content production for their platforms. However, he assured that such content would remain integral to Paramount’s content offering. He emphasised the commitment to local content in key markets, citing the robust local programming lineup on Paramount’s leading free-to-air networks in Australia, Argentina, Chile, and the UK.
