Appear won the Sustainability in Product or Service award for medium-sized companies at the NAB Show Excellence in Sustainability Award ceremony
17 April 2023, Las Vegas — Appear, the global leader in media processing and delivery technology, is today delighted to announce that its X Platform has been awarded the Sustainability in Product or Service award for medium-sized companies (between 101 and 999 employees) at yesterday’s NAB Show Excellence in Sustainability Awards ceremony at NAB Show 2023.
Supported by Amazon Web Services (AWS), this newly launched awards program recognizes individuals, organizations, and products/services for outstanding innovations in media technology that promote conservation and reusability of natural resources while fostering economic and social development.
Appear’s X Platform is a high-capacity, versatile, ultra-low latency platform for high-speed video networking, enhanced IP security, and advanced compression for the remote production, contribution, and distribution markets.
NAB Show Excellence in Sustainability Award Winners were selected by a panel of sustainability experts in one category each for The Sustainability Champion Award, The Sustainability in Leadership Award, and The Sustainability in Product or Service Award. The awards were announced in a live ceremony at NAB Show on April 16.
“It used to be said that there are two certainties in life, death, and taxes, I think there is now a third: However important sustainability is to you right now, it’s only going to get more important,” says Thomas Bostrøm Jørgensen, CEO, Appear. “This fact combined with the need for everyone in the media & entertainment space to do whatever they can to be more sustainable makes me truly delighted to have won this inaugural NAB Show Excellence in Sustainability Award. Being sustainable isn’t just the right thing to do, today it’s the only thing to do if you want your company and industry to be successful.”
“In independent lab tests our X Platform’s CO2 and Watts per channel performance was far superior to a leading competitor,” said Thomas Lind, Director Product Management, Appear. “I believe that the reason the X Platform performed so well in the most important measures of sustainability is not that we’ve designed our solutions from the ground-up to be sustainable, but it’s because we put elegant engineering at the heart of what we do. In the same way, that elegant code is efficient code, elegance in engineering ensures that efficiency and sustainability is baked into our solutions. Moving forward we will use our engineering elegance, combined with some new ideas we have to further boost our sustainable credentials, ensuring that our solutions can be the most sustainable we can make them.”
Key highlights from Appear’s X Platform award entry were:
- Independent lab tests showed that X Platform consumes 5 x less energy than other market-leading server-based solutions
- When encoding a UHD channel, the X Platform produces 38x less CO2 than the leading competitor
- A new customer recently told us that the density of our X Platform enabled it to reduce equipment shipping costs by 80%
“The 2023 NAB Show Excellence in Sustainability Awards honor leaders who have influenced their teams to achieve a more sustainable pathway, organizations that have launched or completed sustainability initiatives, and products or services that significantly improve sustainability or provide sustainable market alternatives,” said NAB Executive Vice President of Global Connections and Events Chris Brown. “We congratulate Appear on this award in recognition of its X Platform and for helping the content industry meet the critical environmental challenges of today and tomorrow.”
“Embedding sustainability within an organization’s strategy is not only good for the planet, it is good for business,” said Barbara Lange, principal, and CEO of Kibo121 and also the program manager for the awards. “Sustainability embraces environmental impacts, as well as giving back to the communities in which we work and live. I am delighted to see the many organizations who submitted applications for these awards and look forward to seeing even more in the coming years.”
