AMC Networks has announced a new four-part docuseries titled Gold Rush, which will spotlight the San Francisco 49ers’ historic run in the NFL during the 1980s and 1990s. The series is a collaboration between AMC Studios and Skydance Sports and features NFL legend Tom Brady as one of the executive producers.
Gold Rush will delve into the 49ers’ five Super Bowl wins in just 15 years and explore how this remarkable period transformed both the NFL and the Bay Area. Furthermore, the docuseries will feature exclusive interviews with key figures from the franchise’s golden era, including Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, Steve Young, and former team owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr.
Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks, said, “This is a docuseries that has the stakes, storylines and scale to stand alongside our scripted dramas in the best way possible. What an opportunity to bring these remarkable championship seasons back to life in a way that could only be possible with this dream team of producing partners.”
Additionally, Gold Rush will include never-before-seen archival footage from NFL Films. The project is being produced in association with Religion of Sports and Brady’s 199 Productions, reinforcing its status as a deeply personal story for the former quarterback, who grew up a devoted 49ers fan in the Bay Area. Brady will also appear on screen.
“The 49ers Dynasty changed everything,” said Ken Rodgers, executive producer at NFL Films. “In between the Super Bowl victories by Green Bay and Pittsburgh in the ’60s and ’70s, and the high-flying victories by the Cowboys and Patriots in the ’90s and 2000s, the NFL was changed forever by San Francisco’s performance on the field and their approach to the sport off the field. Thanks to our partners at AMC, Skydance Sports and Religion of Sports, we finally get to tell the story of the dynasty that created the modern NFL.”
Moreover, the series will examine how the 49ers’ on-field dominance and organizational innovation became a blueprint for modern teams both in football and in the corporate world. The show aims to be more than just a sports documentary; it will also serve as a cultural commentary on ambition, leadership, and legacy.
Gotham Chopra, co-founder of Religion of Sports, said, “The ’80s 49ers are the flashpoint for the NFL as we know it today.” He added, “The coaching brilliance, the superstar players, the corporate ambition and cunningness — that’s pretty much every team in the modern NFL and corporate America at large. This is a cultural allegory bigger than football and there are no better partners than AMC, Skydance, NFL Films and my friend Ken Rodgers to tell it with.”
The series will be directed by Chopra and Rodgers. Additionally, Ryan Kelly and Nick Mascolo will serve as showrunners and executive producers alongside Jesse Sisgold, Jason Reed, and Jon Weinbach of Skydance Sports; Ross Ketover, Keith Cossrow, Rodgers, and Jessica Boddy of NFL Films; and Chopra, Brady, and Ameeth Sankaran for Religion of Sports.
