Amazon has announced that 21 New York Yankees regular season games will be available exclusively on its Prime Video streaming service during the 2025 season. The move comes as streaming platforms increasingly compete for live sports content.
The live-streamed games will be available at no extra cost to Prime Video members in New York State, Connecticut, north and central New Jersey, and northeast Pennsylvania regions where a significant portion of the Yankees’ fanbase is located.
For decades, live sports have been primarily broadcast on cable television, but there has been a noticeable shift towards digital platforms as more viewers move away from traditional TV subscriptions.
Furthermore, Netflix (NFLX.O) has been investing heavily in live sports content to broaden its audience. This includes exclusive streaming rights for major events such as the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul boxing match. Additionally, the company has secured a $5 billion deal to become the exclusive home of WWE Raw in multiple regions and is reportedly considering a bid for Formula 1’s U.S. TV rights.
As competition intensifies, streaming services like Prime Video are looking to expand their live sports programming to drive subscriber growth and increase advertising revenue. Live sports events are known for attracting large and highly engaged audiences, making them valuable assets for digital platforms.
Additionally, Amazon Prime Video already streams a variety of live sports in the U.S., including the NBA, Thursday Night Football, NASCAR, Seattle Kraken games, and Overtime Elite events. The addition of Yankees games further strengthens its presence in the live sports streaming market. This development underscores the increasing shift of premium sports content from traditional broadcasters to on-demand digital platforms.
