Akamai Technologies’ Earnings Surpass Expectations, Despite Revenue Not Meeting Forecasts in Q4
Akamai Technologies, Inc. recently announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2023. The company’s earnings exceeded expectations, while its revenue fell short. It recorded a year-over-year revenue increase attributed to the strong performance in the security and computing sectors.
The demand for Akamai’s API security solutions across various industries and the positive reception of Akamai Connected Cloud contributed significantly to the revenue growth.
In terms of net income, Akamai saw a rise to $161.2 million, or $1.03 per share, up from $128.8 million, or 82 cents per share, compared to the same quarter in the previous year. This increase was mainly due to the revenue growth observed during the quarter. The non-GAAP net income also saw an uptick, reaching $262.6 million, or $1.69 per share, an improvement from $216.4 million, or $1.37 per share, from the year before, outperforming the consensus estimate by 10 cents.
For 2023, the company reported a GAAP net income of $547.6 million, or $3.52 per share, an increase from $523.7 million, or $3.26 per share in 2022. The non-GAAP net income for the year rose to $960 million, or $6.20 per share, from $857.7 million, or $5.37 per share in the previous year.
The company’s quarterly revenue reached $995 million, a 7% increase from $927.8 million in the same quarter of the previous year, driven by enhanced engagement in the Security and Compute divisions. Despite this growth, the figure was slightly below the expected $998 million. Akamai’s annual revenue grew, rising to $3.81 billion from $3.61 billion in 2022.
The Security Technology Group’s revenue saw an 18% increase, primarily due to the high demand for its Guardicore Segmentation Solution. Despite this growth, the revenue from this group needed to meet the anticipated $478.6 million.
The Delivery segment saw a slight decrease in revenue, but acquisitions from StackPath and Lumen helped mitigate this. The Compute segment experienced significant growth, supported by the demand for cloud computing solutions and the introduction of the Generalized Edge Compute, surpassing expectations.
Geographically, revenue from the United States increased by 7%, while international revenues also saw a rise, contributing to the overall growth.
In terms of expenses and profitability, the company saw an increase in operating expenses and an improvement in non-GAAP income from operations. It adjusted EBITDA compared to the previous year.
Akamai’s cash flow from operating activities increased in the fourth quarter, and the company continued its share repurchase program, reflecting its financial health.
Akamai guided for the first quarter of 2024, expecting revenues between $980 million and $1 billion, with a non-GAAP operating margin of 29-30% and non-GAAP earnings per share between $1.59 and $1.64. The company anticipates capital expenditures to be 15% of revenues for the quarter. For 2024, Akamai anticipates a revenue growth of 6-8%, with a non-GAAP operating margin of 30% and an earnings growth of 7-11%.
