YouTube, the world’s largest video-sharing platform, is celebrating a major milestone its 20th birthday. Launched in 2005, the platform started with a short clip called “Me at the Zoo,” uploaded by co-founder Jawed Karim. That 19-second video set off a digital revolution that has transformed how people around the globe watch and share content.
To mark the occasion, YouTube has shared new statistics, teased upcoming features, and added a few fun surprises for users exploring the platform on its birthday.
Over the past two decades, users have uploaded more than 20 billion videos to YouTube. According to the company, more than 20 million videos are now uploaded every day (as of March 2025). In 2024, the platform saw more than 100 million comments per day on average, with creators “hearting” about 10 million of those each day. Videos received over 3.5 billion likes daily. YouTube removed public dislikes in 2021, making likes the main visible metric of engagement.
The company also shared music milestones. Over 300 music videos have crossed one billion views each, forming what YouTube calls its “Billion Views Club.” The fastest to hit this mark include Adele’s “Hello” (88 days), Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You,” and Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito ft. Daddy Yankee” (both at 97 days).
YouTube isn’t just celebrating its past it’s also preparing for the future with new features rolling out soon. One major update is the custom multiview feature for YouTube TV subscribers. Initially launching with a few non-sports channels, the feature will expand in the coming months. YouTube is also planning to introduce voice replies to video comments, a tool that was tested in 2024 and will be offered to more creators this year.
Music lovers will benefit from the new “Ask Music” feature, which generates a custom radio station based on the listener’s mood or music description. It’s available for YouTube Premium and YouTube Music users on both iOS and Android.
Additionally, Premium users can now enjoy faster playback speeds with new options like 2.05x, 2.5x, 3x, and even 4x speed on mobile devices. This summer, YouTube will also update its TV app experience. The goal is to improve how users navigate, watch, and interact with videos on their television screens. The update promises easier access to comments, subscription options, and video info.
To add some fun to the 20th birthday, YouTube has introduced what it calls a “Yoodle” birthday-themed version of its logo. Clicking on it will “rick-roll” users with a playful mash-up of Rick Astley’s iconic hit, “Never Gonna Give You Up,” a nod to one of YouTube’s most legendary memes. On select videos, including the first-ever upload “Me at the Zoo,” users will see a festive birthday progress bar and a “20” animation when they like the video.
Desktop users can also type “bday” while watching a video to see an old-school version of the video player interface a nostalgic blast from YouTube’s early days.
YouTube also introduced a limited-edition 20th anniversary logo and shared the origin story of its original logo, which was inspired by Silicon Valley’s CalTrain and the TV Guide.
Michael Nathanson, analyst at MoffettNathanson, said, “YouTube is not only leading in engagement, but also in revenue.” And was recently called YouTube the “new king of all media.” In 2024, it became the second-largest media company by revenue, making $54.2 billion just behind Disney. In 2025, YouTube is expected to take the top spot.
According to Nielsen, YouTube is now the biggest source of TV content in the U.S. based on viewing time, ahead of networks like Disney, Netflix, and Warner Bros. Discovery. After 20 years, YouTube has clearly grown from a small video-sharing site to a global entertainment powerhouse and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down anytime soon.
